SPECIALIST SCIENTIST: BIOINFORMATICIAN

 

Duration: Five Year Fixed Term Contract (Renewable)

 

The SAMRC Genomics Centre is a sequencing facility that provides next generation sequencing services to researchers from across South Africa. Additionally, the Centre conducts its own genomics research. We are looking for a suitably qualified bioinformatician to lead the establishment of a bioinformatics team at the Centre. The incumbent will be responsible for building bioinformatics capacity at the Genomics Centre, to conduct independent research, and to assist our clients with next generation sequencing study design and data analysis.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Oversee processing of data and release of data to Genomics Centre clients.

Provide Bioinformatics support to Genomics Centre Clients.

Establish and lead Bioinformatics team at the Genomics Centre.

Develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines for genomics/transcriptomic/metagenomics data at the Genomics Centre.

Conduct high-impact, innovative Genomics Research.

Assist in the design of projects with other researchers, assessing the bioinformatics needs from a proposal level.

Publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Present research findings at local and international conferences.

Training of postgraduate students and other scientists.

Supervision of MSc and PhD students

Mentoring of postdoctoral fellows

Writing of grants to local and international funding agencies

Management of external funding generated from successful grant applications

Presentation of training workshops in Bioinformatics

Peer-review of journal articles

Core Requirements:

 

PhD in Human Genetics

5 years’ experience in Human Genetics

5 years’ experience in computational and statistical analysis of high-dimensional and multivariate data

Proven publication record in national and international journals.

Familiar and up-to-date knowledge of next generation sequencing modalities

Experience in working in Linux environments

Proficiency in common scripting languages (Python, Java and R)

Human whole genome/transcriptome sequencing analysis and pipeline design

Experience with MGI-Tech Co laboratory workflows for whole genome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing and exome sequencing.

Experience in processing MGI-Tech Co data and converting platform specific data to VCF files.

Proven track record of successful international grant(s) as Principal Investigator.

Presentations at national and international conferences.

Supervision of MSc students until graduation.

Advantageous:

 

Proven national and international collaborations in the field of bioinformatics.

Experience with Good Clinical/Laboratory Practices.

A track record initiation and management of several research projects

Experience with Bisulphite sequencing data, specifically MGI-Technology data

Familiarity and up-to-date knowledge of next generation sequencing modalities

Proven track record as reviewer of journal manuscripts in the field of Human Genetics.
