NextUp is at the start of a journey. A journey which has a clear and ambitious goal of building a youth employment start-up called NextUp in Gauteng. We aim to launch in 2022, taking on a cohort of young people during a start-up and learning phase, setting them on a new path to employability. Our mission is to enable young people at risk of exclusion and poverty to take charge in building the resilience, qualifications and experience they need to enter and sustain rewarding work.
About the Job
NextUp is looking for a highly motivated, capable individual to join as its second employee, after the newly appointed CEO. You will be part of the start-up management team that will design and launch NextUp, build a team, implement its strategy, and drive it to scale. The NextUp project is Gauteng based and funded by the US-based Frankel family with South African roots. It will be a hybrid model of face-to-face and online engagement, located in an area of need in Gauteng, likely within a township or similar area.The Programme Manager: Outreach and Student Wellbeing will provide leadership, guidance and support to identified young participants throughout the programme. This individual will have a particular focus on the outreach and commitment stages, while also adapting the wraparound support to suit each subsequent stage of our engagement.
Developing appropriate and creative approaches to engaging and building trust and resilience.
Conducting outreach as needed with parents, teachers and relevant community leaders and organisations.
Identifying and assessing the learning and development needs of individuals and cohorts.
Developing strong partnerships so that most referral pathways can be outsourced.
Using assessment data to inform and shape learning support interventions.
Designing a monitoring and tracking system which is effective in assessing progress.
Developing and implementing an appropriate approach to recruitment, team building and professional development for the psycho-social work aspects of NextUP.
Providing training, supervision and support to NextUp staff and volunteers in the program to deal with young people and their challenges.
Demonstrating insights and an understanding of the psycho-social trauma which impacts the lives of participants, in particular issues of absent or inappropriate role models, as it relates specifically to young men.
Possess a university degree, in an appropriate field such as social science, education, psychology or equivalent
At least 15 - 20 years’ experience working with communities, young people and marginalised groups with a trauma informed approach
Excellent people and team management skills
Excellent organisational skills
Driven, self-motivated and a team player
Ability to multitask
Competent in MS word, PowerPoint and Excel
Passionate about youth employment and improving the lives of young South Africans
Entrepreneurial, interested, flexible and committed to working for change in South Africa.
