Five-year contract


GIPD is seeking a Senior Programme Manager: Technology to take responsibility for a range of the SAMRC’s grant and innovation programmes. The incumbent will report to the GIPD Executive Director and will be responsible for the following strategic and core key result areas:




Manage SAMRC innovation programs

Strategic oversight and management of the SAMRC’s intellectual property (IP) and IP developed through funded projects

IP commercialization, fund raising and sector development

IP awareness raising

Facilitating compliance with the IPR Act

Manage various SAMRC and strategic grant programs, including pre- and post-award management of grants

Management of program budgets

Project management

Development/optimization and implementation of standard operating procedures

Liaison with the SAMRC leadership and relevant program Steering Committees

Optimal and effective staff management

Stakeholder engagement across funding bodies, academia, government and industry

Core Requirements:


Masters level qualification or higher, preferably in a science discipline (e.g. life sciences, biotechnology, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering etc.)

Additional business qualification and/or completion of at least two recognized IP/Tech Transfer/ innovation training workshops

8-10 years of relevant experience in innovation management, IP / technology transfer or technology businesses and project management



Experience of working under the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Demonstrated experience in managing a portfolio of projects in area of expertise

Experience in grants management

Demonstrated experience in working across funding bodies, academia, government departments and industry

A working knowledge of / background in health, especially medical devices

Excellent understanding of the SA research and innovation environment

Understanding of legal contracts

Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills
