As one of the leading Theatre & Performance Departments in the continent, The University of Cape Town’s Centre

for Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies (CTDPS), is a dynamic site for the study of contemporary performance

practice in Africa and places emphasis on engaged and active research, critically and socially relevant teaching, as

well as continental and southern collaborations.

Built on a proud tradition of excellence, the CTDPS is committed to nurturing creative and academic achievement

within the context of a vibrant local, continental and international performing arts community. In line with UCT’s

Vision 2030 of expanding UCT’s reach on the African continent, we are seeking a dynamic individual who has

knowledge and experience of teaching and researching Contemporary Theatre & Performance both within the

South African context and a broadened African context.

Requirements:

  • At A/Professor Level a PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies or in a cognate field.
  • At Senior Lecturer level a PhD or MA in Theatre and Performance Studies or Masters Qualification in a

cognate field. (In the case of an MA, the candidate will commit to pursuing PhD studies).

  • A proven track record in teaching Acting, Performance, Performance Making and Directing to

undergraduate and postgraduate students

  • A proven track record in teaching and making contemporary performance in at least three of the following:

o Live and Public Art

o Installation Performance Art

o Site Specific Performance

o Acting in theatre and on screen

  • A proven track record of making and directing both professional and student theatre productions.
  • A proven track record in lecturing academic aspects of Theatre and Performance to both undergraduate

and postgraduate students, with a particular focus on contemporary performance.

  • Knowledge and experience of teaching and researching Contemporary Theatre & Performance both within

the South African context and a broadened African context.

  • Proficiency in engaging and teaching Performance as Research in Practice.
  • A proven track record of research (inclusive of creative works) and a commitment to continued

postgraduate supervision in contemporary performance practice, with a focus on performance within the

South African context and a broadened African context.

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities within the context of a tertiary institution.

Advantageous:

  • Capability to teach in at least one of these aspects: Voice and Movement
  • The capacity to engage and facilitate the expansion of the CTDPS’s networks into the broader African

Continent and taking UCT’s mission of being a world-class African university seriously.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning, implementing, coordinating and teaching both theory and practice across all four undergraduate

years and at postgraduate level.

  • Supervising postgraduate studies
  • Directing student Productions
  • Leadership and Administration
  • Convenorship of courses

  • Social Responsiveness
