The HIV Mental Health Research Unit in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health seeks to appoint a female Research Enrolled Nurse (REN) for a part-time (32 hours per week), 2.5-year contract position. The research is funded by the National

Institute of Mental Health in the U.S. and is a R01 grant in collaboration with investigators from Columbia University examining

the effectiveness of IMPACT+, a coping intervention for addressing sexual trauma in women living with HIV. We particularly

seek to attract candidates who have an understanding and experience in dealing with women with histories of sexual trauma.

We invite applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment as soon as possible.

Requirements:

  • Diploma in Nursing, NQF6 or above
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council
  • Experience in conducting clinical research, ideally in HIV and/or mental health
  • Demonstrable experience performing phlebotomy
  • Demonstrable experience administering mental health measures
  • Verbal, written and reading fluency in English and isiXhosa
  • Computing skills including fluency with Microsoft Office and the use of the internet
  • Willingness to be flexible and assist with various tasks in the study as the need arises
  • Willingness to commute to and work in primary care HIV clinics
  • Ability to work well within a team

In addition to the above, the following would be advantageous:

  • Valid driver’s license and own transport
  • Demonstrable HIV research experience
  • Previous exposure to primary care HIV clinics in South Africa
  • Familiarity with UCT (or other tertiary institution) administration processes

Responsibilities:

  • Perform phlebotomy on participants
  • Assisting with the collection of all follow up data
  • Administering mental health measures to participants
  • Assisting with the scheduling of therapy sessions with participants
  • Participating in weekly supervision
  • Liaising with the research team
  • Providing regular updates to the Project Manager
  • Engaging in regular communication with staff at the Clinic site
  • Assisting with various tasks as the need arises
