Duration: 7- month Fixed Term Contract


The South African Medical Research Council’s Gender and Health Research Unit will conduct a study to adapt two mental health interventions for trauma survivors in KZN. The project will also investigate the feasibility and acceptability of its use among isiZulu speaking women in Durban. The Unit therefore seeks to employ a suitable qualified person for 7 months to assist in the adaptation of the interventions and lead the facilitation and pilot testing of the mental health interventions. The person will also be responsible for the co-ordination of the process evaluation aspects of the project.




Coordinate and implement the technical operation of the adaptation of the mental health intervention project according to study protocol

In-depth knowledge of trauma care/mental health

Assist with adaptation/ development of intervention and the facilitation manuals

Lead facilitation and pilot testing the interventions

Co-ordinate and collect research process data as per study protocol whilst ensuring quality control and quality assurance

Communication of research outputs including progress reports

Plan, coordinate and manage all logistics and operational aspects of project

Keep records of data collected and process of adaptation

Train and support staff in facilitation of intervention

Provide support to participants

Core Requirements:


4 Year Bachelor of Psychology Degree or equivalent qualification.

4 years of relevant experience in mental health support to survivors of sexual violence

2 years’ experience in conducting research with survivors of sexual violence

Fluency in speaking and writing in isiZulu and English

Valid South African driver’s license code 08

Coordination and supervisory skills

MS Office package (including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).



Trauma counsellor

Experience in longitudinal research mental health research

Experience in doing research with rape survivors

Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Counsellor

Training skills
