Description

A vacancy exists for a Pathology Practice Manager based in the Life Pathology Lab at Life Fourways  Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the operations of the Life Healthcare Pathology Laboratory, to ensure smooth running, quality, & compliance, and provide research coordination and strategic project management.

 

Critical Outputs

Visible Clinical Leadership

 

Align the clinical and quality practices to support the hospitals growth strategy.

Effective implementation of Life Healthcare standards, policies and work procedures including occupational health and safety legislation and professional Code of Conduct.

Complying with the pathway to deliver on the highest quality patient results and supporting doctor efficiency.

Ensure clinical competence (through Continuing Professional Development) CPD for all staff.

Follow clinical and quality measures in place to mitigate the risk of Serious Reportable Events.

Report all incidents for investigation and details of root causes are analysed with appropriate corrective actions

Ensure quality of patient samples prior to processing and review all results prior to sending out to medical practitioner.

Managing Laboratory Operations:

 

Monitor and maintain the quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.

Manage the implementation and correct application of all Life Healthcare policies and procedures, good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) principles to ensure compliance

Supervise and manage the duties of and workflow processes of lab staff to ensure optimal resource mobilization, effective lab management, and promotion of a cohesive, values-driven team

Staff management and development; address skill gaps to ensure a high standard of technical output and quality

Manage lab regulatory documentation

Oversee lab-specific stock including planning, preparation, storage standards, and supplier relations

Maintain lab productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas, identify peak and slack periods, to assist with operational/ staffing adjustment.

Oversee the management and storage of biohazardous waste and toxic materials

Equipment Management:

 

Operate, maintain, and calibrate the equipment used, ensure that it is operating efficiently and providing accurate results.

Ensure quality control has been validated, report failures and corrective actions taken and recorded.

Implement sound housekeeping procedures and work effectively with others as a team member to ensure safe working environment in accordance with safety protocols. This includes the on-going maintenance of quality control standards and adherence to infection control measures, correct disposal of bio-hazardous waste and participation in audits that may occur.

Oversee and monitor equipment maintenance, asset management, procurement of goods, utilization of resources, optimization of stock levels and reduction of costs.

Quality Reporting:

 

Manage the correct application of quality assurance processes

Report incidents, including instrument failures, problem solutions, read and acknowledge documents and action tasks in compliance with relevant organizational policy

Adhere to professional conduct requirements in line with organizational policy and relevant professional body ethical standards.

Maintain all documented QMS processes through monitoring as per QA policy manual.

Represent the organization by applying the principles of customer care in the medical technology field and interacts professionally and ethically with patients, clients, doctors and hospital staff.

Monitors the implementation of service levels and quality standards, ISO 9000, ISI 15189, ISO 22870 and lean processes in accordance with the principles of Good Laboratory practice, SANAS accreditation requirements.

Maintain and monitor quality assurance through quality control, health and safety, standard operating procedures, turnaround time targets, to ensure that the POCT lab delivers high quality, cost effective and safe service.

Adverse events and incident recording; perform investigations into resolution of customer complaints/ discrepancies to ensure positive image of the organization by clients and patients.

Business Management:

 

Thorough understanding and management of operational environment in relation to billing and business operating model to ensure processes are compliant with funder requirements

Ensure processes that impact billing is executed thoroughly and associated risks are managed in a timely fashion.

Responsible for oversight and support of resubmission of rejected claims and supporting the team in managing rejections.

Structure and lead the team to ensure that billing is done on time and backlog are avoided.

Ensure cash management processes are being followed correctly.

Implement funder requirements by managing and assigning roles and responsibilities amongst the team to ensure these are delivered on i.e., specific results being sent to funders from the lab, intricacies of billing requirements based on funder or test type etc.

Infection Prevention:

 

Employee and patient safety and protection by use of appropriate (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment (including the storage and appropriate disposal of PPE). Frequent disinfection of benchtops.

Ensure safety is maintained as per OHS Act.

Education and training

 

Manage and implement the required training sessions and continuing professional development (CPD) activities to continuously update knowledge and skills as well as comply with the professional registration requirements.

Manage and oversee on-site training of laboratory staff, interns, and associated health workers in laboratory techniques, processes and systems, if assigned by laboratory manager and deemed competent to do so.

Ensure Infection Prevention and Control principles are applied consistently e.g. Hand Hygiene.

Relationship with internal and external stakeholders

 

Manage staff abilities to participate in partnerships of trust and respect whilst maintaining professional and cordial relationships with all internal and external stakeholders through ongoing communication and feedback.

Stock Management

 

Participate in the scheduled stock counts and order necessary stock timeously to avoid shortages in the laboratory.

Monitor stock expiry dates, use the earliest expiry dates first, pack stock accordingly.

Maintain the labs inventory, anticipate needed supplies

Requirements:

 

Completion of a Medical Technology diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, in discipline Clinical Pathology.

Registration with HPCSA (Medical technologist in discipline Clinical pathology)

Minimum 2 years’ management/supervisory experience with demonstrable project management administrative leadership

Minimum 5 years’ experience in an appropriate/relevant laboratory

Life Healthcare has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy in place which requires all employees to be COVID-19 vaccinated.
