Khula-LEAP is a multi-modal study designed to comprehensively characterize (using EEG, MRI, behavioural and
microbiome assessments) the development of executive functions over the 1st 1000 days of life
across recruitment sites in South Africa (n=330) and Malawi (n=330).
We seeking a full-time (40 hours per week), 24-month contract position as Medical (Research) Officer in the
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at University of Cape Town to support the project. The main purpose
of this position is to coordinate the recruitment team, conduct structured clinical interviews and administer formal
cognitive and behavioural assessments. The successful candidate will be required to present information about
the study to relevant parties and contribute to academic outputs for a longitudinal neuroimaging study.

Requirements:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
- Current registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent
Practitioner
- Excellent verbal and written fluency in English
- At least 1 year clinical research experience
- At least 1 year Peadiatric experience
Advantageous:
- Fluent in isiXhosa
- Good Clinical Practice certification (training can be provided)
- Experience with MRI and EEG
Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision of day-to-day data collection teams
- Provide medical expertise and referral as required
- Conduct structured clinical interviews with children and their parents
- Administer formal cognitive and behavioral assessments to children and their parents (e.g. Global
Scale of Early Development) *you will be trained on the job in the tools which will be used in this study
- Collect blood, stool and breast milk samples from participants
- Ensure patient care meets Good Clinical Practice requirements and standards
- Regular communication with the Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Manager (PM) on day-to-day
matters (i.e. obstacles faced with patient assessments, reporting of adverse events etc.)
- Scientific paper writing for publication (with support from PI)
- Do presentations for hospital management, school management and relevant community members
at recruitment sites regarding information about the study
