Applications are invited for the post of Manager: Research Development in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. This is a full-time, permanent position. The Manager: Research Development will encourage and enable sustainable research in the Faculty of Health Sciences, primarily through submission of funding proposals by the Faculty’s researchers to national and international agencies. As a senior position in the Faculty Research Office the post will manage a team that supports the Faculty in identifying and applying for funding, supports sustainability and research risk mitigation, and manages strategic initiatives and funding schemes. Through these activities within the broader Research Directorate, the role will help the Faculty deliver on its mission, in particular that of undertaking research relevant to the needs of our country and beyond.

Requirements for the job:

  • A PhD in a scientific discipline
  • At least 3 years’ relevant experience in research coordination and management and 5 years’ working in a

research environment

  • Experience working for a higher education institution
  • Experience as a scientific/medical writer, including proposal writing
  • Experience in applying for funding for (ideally health) research
  • Project management experience

The following will be advantageous:

  • A PhD in a biomedical or health sciences related discipline
  • Broad understanding of the national and international research arena
  • In-depth understanding of (ideally health) research at a higher education institution and knowledge of the

administrative processes supporting research

  • Experience in managing staff


  • Manage the research development team in the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Office
  • Provide research funding support (identify funding opportunities, project manage primarily large strategic

grant applications, advise researchers on funding and internal processes, manage funding schemes)

  • Roll out research development related components of the Faculty research strategy, including managing

strategic initiatives of broad relevance

  • Review grant applications and Faculty commitments, to aid risk mitigation and research sustainability
  • Provide input into UCT research support systems
  • Liaise with research stakeholders and participate in research-related activities/events


The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R862,113 and R1,014,250.
