The University of Cape Town has a strong international reputation in ocean and climate research and

teaching. Within the Department of Oceanography, particular areas of interest include the Agulhas and

Benguela Current systems, the Southern Ocean, climate change and variability, marine

biogeochemistry, severe weather and mesoscale meteorology, and modelling. In addition, the

Department since 2017 has hosted the SARChi in Ocean and Atmospheric modelling. The Department

has well developed computing facilities, a marine biogeochemistry laboratory, and access to ship time

for research cruises in the South Atlantic, South Indian and Southern Oceans.

Under the auspices of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) funded by the Department of Higher

Education and Training (DHET) the Department of Oceanography is seeking to appoint a Lecturer for a full-time

permanent position. This appointment will be made in terms of the purposes outlined in the Staffing South African

The nGAP appointment covers a six-year development period during which time a reduced teaching load is given

to allow the appointee to acquire research and teaching skills and to develop a portfolio of published material.

Requirements for the job:

To be eligible for selection for a nGAP post, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be 40 years or younger
• Have a Ph.D. in Oceanography or Atmospheric Science at the time of appointment
• Have proven experience with regional ocean or atmospheric modelling
• Be a black South African citizen

The following would be advantageous:

• A publication record in ocean or atmospheric modelling
• Some experience in lecturing or tutoring undergraduate students.

Responsibilities:

• The incumbent will be expected to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate level, preferably the third

year Ocean and Atmosphere Dynamics course and at Honours level as well as developing their own

research programme with appropriate training and supervision of postgraduate students.

• To contribute to the coastal and ocean modelling research within the Oceanography Department
