Division of Human Genetics in the Department of Pathology (and Institute of Infectious Diseases and

Molecular Medicine, IDM) has four active research groups and a vibrant postgraduate cohort. The Division invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment to a full time, permanent position as a Laboratory Manager (Senior Scientific Officer) commencing as soon as possible. As the successful candidate you will take the responsibility of supporting staff and postgraduate students with research and teaching activities and to also carry out routine administrative and managerial tasks within the Division of Human Genetics.


  • A MSc in genetics or a related discipline
  • Staff management experience
  • Technological competence in molecular genetics/biology especially next generation sequencing
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Good communication and numerical skills (knowledge of stats or ability to compile and read a spread

/balance sheet for a budget report)

  • Good leadership, interpersonal and teaching skills
  • Resourceful with good organisational and time management skills

The following would be advantageous:

  • Professional registration with HPCSA
  • Post MSc experience in a related laboratory environment
  • Bioinformatics skills


  • Research support- conduct genetic research, and assist with research grant development; conduct fault

finding and troubleshooting within the research facility

  • Administrative support for the Human Genetics BSc (Honours) Programme
  • Operate and attend to the management of equipment (e.g. DNA sequencer) and reagents/supplies in the

Human Genetics laboratory, ordering and management of laboratory supplies

  • Teaching and Learning Support: to attend to the scheduling of the postgraduate teaching assessments

and support the postgraduate research training environment

  • Administration/ Leadership & Management- Jointly with staff and students to set standards, demand

high performance, and commit to maintaining quality standards

  • Health and Safety and Hazardous Chemicals duty
  • Divisional website management


The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is between R417 562 and R491 249
