Key Performance Areas include but not limited to:
Draft and file provisional patent applications with the Companies and Intellectual
Property Rights Commission for the University.
Identify and grow the institutions Intellectual Property Portfolio.
Conduct patent searches to determine the patentability of invention disclosures.
Organise awareness campaign sessions with growing number of researchers and
students in order to increase the institutions Intellectual Property Portfolio.
Compile and submit quarterly and bi-annual reports timeously in compliance with VUT,
NIPMO and TIA Programmes.
Participate in the compilation of the institutions annual research report or any other report
Create a database of all the institutions Intellectual Property transactions.
Serve as a member of the Intellectual Property Evaluation Committee.
Conduct novelty searches and prior searches to ensure that the disclosure has not
previously been made known to the public.
Establish a good working relationship and collaborative arrangements with all
Assist in the drafting and reviewing of policies and contracts.
File provisional patents with CIPC.
Identify, evaluate and assess the principle risks and implement measures to control risks.
Qualification and Experience:
Honours Degree or B Tech in Science, Engineering, Business or Law.
A Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
Minimum of five (5) years working experience, and two of (2) years of which must be
gained in Intellectual Property.
Knowledge and understanding of Intellectual Property trends.
Ability to translate research ideas into funding proposals with an understanding of the
potential commercialisation outcomes will be an added advantage.
Knowledge and understanding of the South African and International patenting
Knowledge and understanding of the South African policy landscape relating to research,
innovation systems, science and technology and intellectual property commercialisation
will be an added advantage.
Computer literacy (MS Office – MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Internet).
