Job Description

This post will provide support and assistance to the Senior Field Ranger and Conservation Officer (On Reserve) in all activities related to Conservation Operations within the Landscape, as well as any additional conservation tasks as required from time to time.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist Conservation Officer with Protected Area Management

 

Provide operational support to ensure Conservation Operations annual targets related to PAMP, METT, Eco-Matrix, APP and IAPO are met.

Implement effective ecological monitoring and management through regular patrols, reporting in the required format on sightings, threats & mitigation.

Assist with fauna and flora management on the Reserve, both indigenous and exotic.

Assist with Ecological Restoration of degraded areas

Assist with water conservation, monitoring and management at reserve level

Implement Eco-Matrix activities and IAPO, ensuring production targets are met

Data collection, record keeping and map generation in correct formats

Assist with maintenance related to buildings, vehicles, tools, equipment, roads, tracks, trails, stores, assets, gates, fences etc.

 

Assist Conservation operations with Integrated Catchment management (Fire and Aliens)

 

Assist in driving the implementation of the IAPO production work, quality control and final inspections

Assist Conservation Officer with firebreaks (updating registers, mapping, maintenance, and quality inspections)

Fire suppression activities and reporting according to protocol

Assist with fire readiness

Assist with structural fire prevention and protection

Undertake fire patrols

Assist Projects team with alien vegetation density verifications

Assist with NRM quality inspections and ensure work is completed to standard

 

Assist with support functions for Tourism, Access and Stakeholder engagement within the Protected area

 

Permit checks (Tourism and Non-Tourism)

Visitor Information and Visitor Management

Assist with maintenance of facilities

Assist with Rescues

Monitoring and Inspections of events and functions

Assist with environmental awareness and capacity building interventions on Reserve

 

Compliance & Law enforcement

 

Implement pro-active and reactive patrols and information gathering

Permit checking & inspections

Setting up Observation & Listening Posts

Assist with anti-poaching operations

Law Enforcement (Warnings, Fines, Arrests)

 

 

Administration, Human Resources, OHS

 

Completion of reports, checklists, inspection forms, production forms, timesheets, tracking tools as per line function, protocols and deadlines.

Participate in OHS meetings on the reserve, including completion of OHS related forms, checklists and tracking tools.

Participate and successful completion of training interventions

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Grade 12

At least two year’s relevant experience in a conservation field, including fire fighting, trail maintenance, alien clearing, maintenance of infrastructure, compliance patrols.

A valid Code-B driver’s licence

Own accommodation & transport within reasonable distance from the Reserve

Computer literacy (MS Office suite – Word, Excel, Power Point)

Bilingualism in at least two of the official languages in the Western Cape

No criminal record

 

Competencies & other requirements:

 

Good project planning and organizing skills

Good interpersonal & communication skills

Ability to function independently and within a team

Knowledge in basic mapping and orientation

Knowledge in basic plant and animal identification and ecological processes

Knowledge in basic environmental legislation

Good report writing skills

Willingness to work irregular hours, after hours and perform standby duties

Physical fitness and ability to perform Field Ranger & Fire Fighting duties

 

RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

 

Possession of a valid Peace Officer’s certificate or EMI certification

Firefighting and Incident Command System training and experience

NRG 2 qualification

National Diploma or Degree in Nature Conservation or related field

Working knowledge of QGIS
