The Directorate of Strategic Management Support has a permanent position for a Director at Pretoria Campus.


Critical Performance Areas


  • Coordinate the University’s planning and accountability frameworks and cycles.
  • Compile the Institutional Strategic Plan, the Student Enrolment and Efficiency Plan and the Annual Performance Plan.
  • Conduct Institutional Research, Business Intelligence and Data Analytics.
  • Provide Decision Support Systems and the Management Information Systems.
  • Oversee statutory and compliance reporting (HEMIS).
  • Scenario planning, modeling and forecasting.
  • Institutional research.
  • Business intelligence and decision support systems.
  • Management information systems.
  • Institutional performance measures, outcomes and progress reports.
  • Mid-Year Performance Report.
  • Enrolment analysis, monitoring and internal reporting.
  • Ensure the promotion and support of strategic planning efforts in the various Faculties Divisions of the University.
  • Ensure the alignment of all functional strategic plans with TUT’s Strategic Plan and priorities.
  • Provide management with a planning process, model and phases.
  • Ensuring that the directorate contributes to the realisation of the University’s goals and objectives as defines in the University’s Institutional Operating Plan (IOP).
  • Setting the strategic direction of the directorate and ensuring that appropriate plans are in place at department and centre levels, to achieve the mission, goals and specific objectives of the Directorate.
  • Ensuring that a people plan is in place for the staffing profile of the directorate and that the recruitment, induction, assessment, training and development of all staff within the directorate is effectively and efficiently managed by the units.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the employment equity plan within the unit and within all divisions, departments or units reporting to the Directorate.






  • Ensuring that a people plan is in place for the staffing profile of the directorate.
  • Implementation of University’s performance and development system.
  • Ensure that responsibility is agreed in relation to progressing the needs agreed in personal development plans and that subsequent actions are monitored and evaluated.
  • Ensuring that appropriate structures and mechanisms are in place for the governance of the Directorate including meetings and other decision making/ consultative processes as required.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the Succession plan within the unit.
  • Provide for quality assurance reviews as needed to identify deficiencies on institutional level.
  • Prepare reports regarding progress status.
  • Responsible for the formulation of policies and procedures in relation to environment

to support the University’s overall strategy and for overseeing their implementation.

  • Ensure compliance with University agreements and policies.
  • Communicate and disseminate information to the University community as needed.
  • Ensure that applicable practices are uniformly applied.
  • Financial management of the directorate within the agreed budget.
  • Pursuing, in accordance with relevant University policies and procedures, appropriate avenues for increasing revenue from external sources.
  • Effective management (use and maintenance) of the infrastructure and other assets of the unit.
  • Determine organisational structure, reporting relationships and short and long-term staffing needs based on goals and objectives.
  • The establishment of mechanisms to ensure that workplace health and safety policies are observed.
  • Workplace relations – Responsible for maintaining a work environment free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Being involves appropriately in labour law matters, disciplinary procedures and grievances, and referring them where necessary.




Minimum Requirements


  1. Academic qualifications:


  • PhD/Doctoral degree at NQF level 10 (Focusing on Higher Education and/or Institutional Research, Strategic Management).










  1. Minimum Experience:


  • Minimum five years management experience in a Higher Education environment specifically in strategic management, management Information system, HEMIS and Business Intelligence.
  • Experience in national Higher Education policy, initiatives and legislation, funding framework, strategic and Institutional planning, scenario planning, models and systems, strategy development, organizational development.
  • Human Resource policies and procedures, knowledge management, all strategies within the institution, database management, model development and computer programme applications, Quality Audits on institutional and programme level.
  • Project management experience, including project planning and strategic development.
